Why Remove a Popcorn Ceiling Spray Texture?
What are the reasons for removing a popcorn ceiling?
- Falls Down
- Outdated
- Gets dirty
Over the next few weeks, we will be going over each reason to remove your popcorn ceilings.
Our number one reason to remove the popcorn ceiling is the tendency of the popcorn to fall down over time. As a home ages the popcorn no longer wants to adhere to certain spots in a home for whatever reason. At first notice, the popcorn ceiling will appear to have a small bubble on it. Over time this bubble will increase in size. At this point you have the option of just letting it be or you can decide to touch it to see what the bubble is. If you touch the bubble, in all likely hood, it will crack and possibly fall to the ground (this creates a bit of a mess). Regardless of what you do at first site, this spot will need to be repaired eventually, unless you enjoy looking at a bubble or bare spot in your ceiling.
Once you have decided that you need to repair the ceiling you encounter three more options.
- DIY Repair
- Call a professional
- Remove the spray texture
The best advice we can give if you plan on staying in your home a long time is to hire a professional and remove the popcorn ceiling spray texture all together. We will talk about this next week. However, if you choose to repair the ceiling, we recommend calling a professional, as this is what they do for a living and they know how to make it look right and of course are ultimately responsible for any damage that may occur to flooring and furniture. Professionals are still human and accidents will happen.
If you choose a DIY repair, please remember that acoustic ceiling texture comes in many different shapes and sizes. The color will never match due to age. The old popcorn is usually slightly yellowed, unless it has been painted, and the new popcorn will be more white, causing an inconsistent match in color. You can also buy a can of popcorn ceiling texture if the patch isnt to big, but in our experience, those never come out looking quite right. We have seen the horror and heard about it. Our next article on we will talk about the proper way to do a DIY popcorn repair.
