The first thing you need to know before removing your popcorn ceiling is if it contains asbestos. To know for sure if your popcorn ceiling has asbestos, you should scrape a small area into a plastic back and send it off to an asbestos testing facility. Homes built in the 1970’s may contain asbestos, and possibly homes built in the early 80’s due to overstock. Even if your home was built before 1970, it can never hurt to have it tested. You can always replace the ceiling, but replacing your lungs is a little more difficult.
